What Is News?
News is information about current events, whether it’s an event that happened in your local community or a story of an international incident. News is often shared through various media sources such as newspapers, television and radio. It can also be found on websites and social media. News can be interesting and informative, but it should always be accurate and truthful.
It is not possible to have completely unbiased news because the bias of journalists and their organizations can affect everything from the selection of stories to be reported to the decisions about what facts are important to include in a story. However, online news aggregation sites such as Google News allow users to choose the stories they want to see from multiple sources and can help to avoid some of the problems that can occur with relying on only one source for news.
Generally speaking, news is about people. Although some natural disasters may make news, it is the human impact that usually creates the interest in a story. This is especially true when the news involves a celebrity or other well known person.
Journalists try to balance the need for accuracy and fairness with the desire to produce entertaining news that will capture the interest of readers. To achieve this, they ask themselves the “5 W’s” about a story; who, what, where, when, why and how. This will allow the journalist to decide how much detail to include in a story, and what angle to take on the piece.
